February 11, 2008  We are the faces of FRAG (Barry Students)

Dear Members of the Barry community,

At this time our Florida resident students are facing a serious challenge that threatens their financial ability to attend Barry University.

Florida’s Governor, Charlie Crist, has indicated that he may do away with allocations for the Florida Resident Access Grant (FRAG), which by statue is available to any Florida resident enrolled in an accredited college or university in the State of Florida. We know that there is serious talk by some Florida legislators about also recommending cuts to the FRAG. We cannot let this happen.

Please join me in a University-wide advocacy effort to stop this intended action by the Governor and some state legislators. If you are a resident of the State of Florida, please let Governor Crist and key legislators know that we do not support any cuts to the FRAG.

Join our campaign to save FRAG for our Barry students. The Website will show you how to make your voice heard in Tallahassee. Please click on your appropriate link on the side bar for important information as to how to get involved in this Barry advocacy initiative.

Let Governor Crist and the legislators know that our Barry University students who are Florida residents do not want their educational dreams dashed.

Together we can retain FRAG for our Barry Students!

Sister Linda Bevilacqua, OP, PhD
President

What You Should Say To Keep the FRAG for Barry Students

When writing, calling and/or emailing our key legislators, tell them that saving FRAG will strengthen Florida’s economy because:

Private higher education in Florida represents excellent fiscal management:

With less than 1.48% of the state’s higher education budget, independent colleges and universities produce 31% of all bachelor’s, master’s, doctoral and first professional degrees.

Private colleges and universities are producing a major component of the state’s key professionals:

ICUF institutions graduate a quarter of the state’s future nurses, teachers, engineers, computer scientist and biomedical professionals. Half of them are FRAG recipients.

FRAG is a sound investment for Florida:

For each FRAG eligible student who transfers to the state university the cost to the state budget is nearly four times more than the FRAG grant.

Cutting FRAG will increase debt for Florida families:

Many Florida students and their families will need to borrow more loans, putting them in greater debt and financial hardship for many years.

Cutting FRAG means Florida will lose students to other states:

Those students that can't get into a state school will leave the state of Florida. Many students who obtain their education out of state will not return. The State of Florida will lose “World Class Talent” and negatively impact the state’s economy.

Multiple cases of Influenza A diagnosed on campus this week (07Feb08)

Multiple cases of Influenza A diagnosed on campus this week

The Student Health Center has diagnosed multiple cases of Influenza A in the past week. These cases are NOT related to each other. They have been diagnosed in resident students living in different resident halls and commuting students. This is significant – Student Health Services can now predict that there will be a surge of additional cases in the next two weeks.

Public Safety partners with county for emergency wireless notification system

Emergency wireless notification (Public Safety 18Jan08)

Barry University’s Public Safety Department has partnered with Miami-Dade County to bring the Barry community wireless emergency notifications through Miami-Dade Alerts.

The system, formally announced at a news conference Thursday, Jan. 17, will allow Barry University to send out Barry-specific messages to students, faculty, staff and/or friends of the university who enroll in the service.

The notification system is a free, but voluntary, system that will be tied into that of the whole county.
There will be an official sign-up form at Public Safety locations in Landon 100 and Thompson 111 beginning Tuesday, Jan. 22. By signing up at either location, students, faculty and staff will receive messages on the device of their choice in the event of an emergency. Messages sent to the Barry community will be specific to Barry University, but those who enroll will also receive emergency alerts from Miami-Dade County including, but not limited to, police, fire rescue and severe weather issues.

A message from the Office of the Provost

October 29, 2007

My dear Barry community,

It is with great sadness that I write to tell you that John Beaubrun, vice provost for information technology and assistant professor of computer information systems, passed away on Sunday afternoon.

John was a good and decent man who was committed to Barry’s mission and values. As a member of our university community since 1983, John served in a variety of positions during his twenty-four year tenure. John will be sorely missed by all of us, especially by his colleagues in DoIT. Like you, I mourn the loss of a good friend.

John’s family has asked that the Barry community come together to celebrate John’s life at a funeral Mass in Cor Jesu Chapel on Wednesday, October 31, at 10:00 am. Let us keep John’s family in our prayers.

Linda Peterson,
Provost of the University

What is a common reader?

The common reader is a book assigned to all first-year students to read before or shortly after they arrive on campus. The purpose of a common reader is to integrate you into the University learning community as early as possible. When students, regardless major area of study, read a common text, a shared learning experience is possible. A common reading allows various experiences, reactions, and perspectives to be exchanged and discussed.

Welcome to all Students

Welcome to all  Students.

I would like to wish every one of you a very productive and enjoyable semester.

Please come back often to this "Announcement" page for new information or join a Discussion Forum with your fellow classmates.

Barry's official means of communication with students is BUCMAIL. A student email account is automatically created by the Division of Information Technology for all registered students. The University will communicate with students through this official address, which is recorded in the University's electronic directories and records for each student. All students taking classes that meet on the Barry University campus are required to log in to their official Barry University student email account within one week of the beginning of the semester when they enroll. Faculty or technology coordinators associated with distance education classes or courses that meet off campus should also require students to login to their official Barry University student email accounts

The following are important points to remember about student use of Barry email as well as faculty responsibilities.

bullet

Students should check their email as often as
they check their regular mail. The University recommends checking at least
twice a week;

bullet

Students must maintain their mailboxes to
avoid exceeding their mail quotas. That means routinely deleting old mail and
downloading large files, saving them on their own hard drives and deleting the
files from their email mailboxes;

bullet

The practice of having Barry email forwarded
to other email addresses (such as Hotmail or Yahoo!) is an option for
students, but instructors might advise students that other email addresses may
have limitations, such as limited space that prevents the student from sending
and receiving messages;

bullet

In general, email is not an appropriate medium
for sensitive or confidential information.

Best Wishes!!   Dr. Lin
