In addition to teaching a full course load, many university faculty members also take on “extra-curricular” activities each year. The result is a wealth of contributions to academic fields – publishing papers, presenting at conferences and being named to positions in professional organizations. To honor these achievements, the Faculty Senate annually recognizes these individuals in an award ceremony.

“At Barry, we emphasize teaching but, because we have so many vibrant graduate programs, we also have to be concerned with research,” said Dr. Linda Peterson, provost.

In addition to acknowledging all faculty members with academic contributions, the event also honors one recipient with the Outstanding Faculty Member Award. This year’s recipient, Dr. Silvia Macia, has more than 55 student advisees, in addition to publishing prolifically on her sea grass and sea urchin research.

“This is one of those faculty members who quietly goes about her business, while excelling at everything she does,” Peterson said.

In total, 106 faculty members were recognized at the ceremony, held Wednesday, April 22.
