Facilities Management will be kicking off a campus-wide
recycling program, introducing “single stream recycling,” next
Wednesday, Oct. 1. Students, faculty and staff will
be able to collect recyclables in their rooms and offices, which
will then be delivered to designated collection points on campus.
This campus-wide initiative will introduce single stream
recycling, a new technology being operated in partnership with Waste
Management. The program allows participants to collect all their
recyclables – paper, plastic, aluminum – in a single container for
subsequent collection and processing. When used in communities, the
method has been shown to increase the amount of recycled goods by 30
percent, also benefiting the environment by cutting down on the
number of collection vehicles on the road.
At Barry,
students will be provided collection bins in their rooms, which will
be used to collect items and deliver them to the collection point
for their building. Academic buildings and offices are asked to
create collection bins in their offices, which should then be
brought to an assigned collection point for that building.
The list of campus collection points will be released on the
Facilities Management website when the program begins next
Wednesday, Oct. 1.
Cardboard boxes will have two
official collection points at the Landon and Thompson loading docks.
Boxes should be broken down and placed in the bins provided at those
points. Any departments that generate a number of boxes are asked to
call Facilities Management for a pickup.
The success of this
new initiative will require campus-wide cooperation. Everyone on
campus – students, faculty and staff – is asked to take ownership
and participate, making Barry’s campus a more
environmentally-friendly space for all.
