How to Avoid Swine Flu and Stay Healthy

Swine Flu Update

(4 p.m. Friday, May 1)

Barry University continues to monitor the state’s Swine Flu situation. As of 4 p.m., Friday, May 1, two (2) H1NA Swine Flu cases had been confirmed in Florida—one in Broward County, and the other in Lee County.

Please note that Barry University has not had any suspicious cases reported to Human Resources, identified in the Student Health Center, or reported at any of its sites throughout Florida. At this time there are no plans to change the normal operation of the University. However, in response to the World Health Organization raising its alert level to a 5, respective local hospitals and health care facilities are preparing for a possible outbreak.

Barry University is following the CDC guidelines for Institutes of Higher Education. The following has been implemented:

  • The University’s core health emergency response team has met multiple times this week to review Barry’s plan to respond to public health emergencies.
  • The Student Health Center has been in contact with the Miami-Dade County Public Health Department to review their protocol for students with flu-like symptoms.
  • The Student Health Center and Facilities Management have determined that they have appropriate supplies to continue infection control procedures that are being practiced.
  • Communications have been sent to Barry students, faculty and staff encouraging healthy habits and personal hygiene.
  • Persons with influenza-like symptoms are being told to consult with their physician and/or the Student Health Center for recommended treatment.
  • The Office of Mission and Ministry is following the Catholic archdiocese recommendations, suspending taking the wine from a common cup during the sacrament of communion.
  • All members of the core health emergency response team are monitoring the CDC websites for up-to-date information regarding the H1N1virus.
  • Information will continue to be posted on the internal, external, and student web sites. A recorded notice will also be placed on the Barry University Information Hotline (305-899-4000), stating the university is operating as usual without disruption of classes or events at this time.

Barry University’s Student Health Center and health emergency response team are continuing to monitor the situation closely and will respond appropriately pending the direction of the Miami Dade Public Health Department.
