CD: cd00024.2, CHROMO, Query added PSSM-Id: 14766 Source: Smart
Description: Chromatin organization modifier (chromo) domain is a conserved region of around 50 amino acids found in a variety of chromosomal proteins, which appear to play a role in the functional organization of the eukaryotic nucleus. Experimental evidence implicates the chromo domain in the binding activity of these proteins to methylated histone tails and maybe RNA. May occur as single instance, in a tandem arrangement or followd by a related "chromo shadow" domain.

Feature 1: histone binding site
Evidence: Structure: 1GUW binds the Lysine 9-Methyl Histone H3 N-terminal Peptide

  with Cn3D 4.1
Structure: determinants of specificity for methylated Lys

  with Cn3D 4.1
Comment: induced-fit mechanism: the flexible N-terminal tail moves closer in the peptide-bound state
