President Bush in his weekly radio address said, "In this time of grief for so
many around the world, Americans have come together to pray for the victims and

POTENTIAL ECOLOGICAL IMPACTS
OF INDIAN OCEAN TSUNAMI ON NEARSHORE MARINE ECOSYSTEMS
In addition to causing
tremendous loss to human life and property, the tsunami that devastated coastal
communities along the Indian Ocean may have also caused extensive environmental
damage throughout the nearshore marine ecosystems in this region. NOAA
researchers have found that tsunamis usually have little, if any, effect on deep
open ocean waters, however, they rapidly intensify and become highly destructive
once they enter shallower coastal waters—exactly where this area’s valuable
coral reefs are known to thrive. Nearshore mangroves and sea turtle nesting
areas are also likely to have been inundated by the powerful tsunami waves.

for Tsunami Relief
A good cause with a great URL (click for
yourself), this site directs, rather than collects, donations to aid those
affected by December’s catastrophic waves. Here’s the deal: Hold an eBay
auction, pledging (via Missionfish, a previous Hot Site awardee) to donate
proceeds to benefit tsunami victims. Alternately, you might prefer to simply bid
on an appropriate auction. And that’s it. Simple and elegant, with its heart in
the right place
