DNA technology now is called recombinant DNA technology and has been popularized as genetic engineering or cloning. Recombinant DNA technology means the use of genetic tools to the production of specific proteins by biological factories such as bacteria. DNA that is made up of connected segment from different kinds of source, for example, from two different species or perhaps from a combination of natural and synthetic DNA. This new DNA can then be introduced into a cell, which will then convert the cell and its progeny to produce specific proteins.
Cloning is a typical recombinant DNA work to obtain many copies of a particular gene by producing genetically identical cells or organisms from a common ancestor.
Restriction enzyme is an enzyme, that functions to break foreign DNA molecules at very specific sites which results in 'sticky ends'. This enzyme is extensively used in recombinant DNA technology.
