A primary source is a document or some other evidence written or created during the time under study. A primary source is somewhat like the first hand experience of an event. It can be a published source such as an autobiography or eyewitness accounts, an unpublished source such as a personal letter or journal, oral tradition or oral history, or visual document and artifact. A secondary source is a document that interprets and analyzes primary sources. It is more like second hand information. A few examples of secondary sources are encyclopedias and journal articles which are not primary reports of new research.
