According to McMillan's 'Writing Papers in the Biological Sciences' primary sources are reports of original findings and ideas. They are directed towards scientific audiences and usually take on the form of peer-reviewed research in scholarly journals. Good examples of primary papers are dissertations and research papers. Secondary Sources are general works based on primary sources, and they are usually written for audiences with little to no scientific knowledge. Good examples of secondary sources are scientific articles in magazines.
