Primary sources are written by the person doing the experiment, is an original work, and is written in a scholarly fashion. An example of this is a peer review. Secondary source articles use primary sources to summarize, they are not written in a scholarly fashion, and are targeted to both a scientific and non-scientific audience. An example is a review article.
